TBT blind ninja turtles.

Remember in drawing class you had to do blind contour drawings?

You weren't suppose to look down at the paper as you drew. So a hand would look like that mess. The drawings were sometimes interesting but mostly trash.  In the 6th grade I started drawing everything with my eyes closed. Everything= superheroes and ninja turtles.

I am still drawing ninja turtles with my eyes closed and they still look the same.

Much more fun than those damn hands.

WIP painting

I have a tradition where I paint all the babies in my family.  Here's the newest one. My niece Emma.
It is slightly larger than life size. Starting it with acrylics on hardboard. Black/ white/ Burnt Umber.
Poorman's Grisaille. When I have a little more time I'll put finish it with oils in glorious color!

old oil painting

This was done when I was still in school. Sometimes I cringe when I Look at old work. So many things I would do differently.

sketchpage

Hey friends, this is a page from the little sketchbook. I was at the Met. Copied a Rembrandt and a Eakins. And for good measure sketched two people sleeping on the train and two mythical beasts. the fat fish and the punk unicorndonkey.
Clearly I need to focus.

sketch on Train

Hey Friends, I haven't posted one of these in a while. This was done tonight. The model was kind enough to fall asleep for about 3 and a half stops. The page is about the size of my palm and the drawing a little smaller than business card.

sketchbook page

Hi there, I've been working on a new sketchbook. My commute to work takes about 45 minutes so that gives me plenty of time to do some doodling. most of these drawings take about 2 stops. You can never tell when a person will move or get up at their stopb so it's good to limit how many lines you put down. My plan is to pick someone sleeping.

Life drawing

Drawing and posting on the train.
The trick to doing these drawings is going with the bumps. (good words to live by I always say) When your hand slips or the train makes a sudden jerk, go with it. Don't fight it. If you're constantly fighting it your lines will be stiff, jagged and just plain old  ugly.  Make the drawing feel like you meant to do it, look confident. Its like tripping in public, act like you meant to do it and if people laugh, good! you meant to do that! YOU SIR/MADAM ARE A PHYSICAL COMIC GENIUS! you can go home and cry about it later. Also art isn't like baseball, you can cry all you want. In fact Im crying right now. On the  train, over this post.  yep that's what Im doing.
No. Im lying. But all that other stuff about drawing is all true.
still standing,
jiaxing.

Don't let the angry bird fool you, that is a super fine line on that pen. It was a quick ride and luckily the three people closes to me had interesting faces and all fell asleep within minutes of getting on to the train. About 4 train stops. The best models are always asleep.

sketchbook pages

I don't Like doing things one way. Doing things one way is boring. Sketchbooks for me are for experimenting and finding.  My scanner is down and i'm a little too lazy to use my good camera so take pictures, but you get the idea.  This first page was started in a park. Horse faces and angry pigeons. or the bastards of the skies as I call them.

This next page was done 2 days ago in a subway train. I get them when they sleep. A little more realistic but still a quick sketch.
This final sketch is complete fantasy and made up.
If I get a good response I'll post more of these.
